144,000 Scots Sought Scottish Debt Help reports Citizens Advice Scotland

Posted on Tuesday, 13 December 2011 in Debt NewsScottish Debt Help in ScotlandCitizens Advice Scotland reported that in 2010/2011, Almost 144,000 people asked for debt advice, the provider of Scottish Debt Help, Trust Deed Scotland can reveal.

The number of people seeking advice on debts is effectively 400 per day and CAS has had to take on more advisers are their waiting rooms have become inundated with thousands of Scots, unsure who to turn to and often many of which are distressed.

Perhaps more concerning, even in today's tough financial climate where creditors and lenders should be more sympathetic to their debtors where the individual is experiencing financial difficulties, CAS also revealed that enforcement action and court action has increased.

Susan McPhee, the head of policy at Citizen Advice Scotland has issued a warning to the Scottish government, writing a letter to MPs and MSPs advising on the dangers of cutting spending to CAS, in a time of financial disarray.
Susan advised "People are often in tears when they come into us, because they're at the end of their tether, maybe worried about losing their home for example and they don't know where to turn.

Many of them are people who are already vulnerable, such as pensioners, families on low incomes, or sick and disabled people who are having their benefits cut even further because of the welfare reforms."

As an independent introducer of ethical debt advice, Trust Deed Scotland have also spoken to many people in the same position and a senior figure at the Scottish owned and operated company advised:

"Without services such as CAS, the infrastructure for free, impartial debt help will collapse and our concerns as for those people who are desperate for help.

In a vulnerable position, many of these people could approach an unscrupulous sales driven debt solutions company which is something we all want to avoid.

Scotland needs real solutions for real people."
